Savage Dreams: A Journey into the Landscape Wars of the American West
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (November, 1999)
Author: Rebecca Solnit
Average review score:

No romanticism here
Solnit's juxtaposition of the insidious nuclear poisoning of Nevada to the making of Yosemite National Park (that she shows has been "loved to death" since it was first discovered by whites more than 150 years ago)makes this book a must for all environmentalists. Solnit deals directly with themes of conquest and redemption in historic efforts to both tame and use these lands. Readers gain specific understanding about two places that are, after all, national icons. However, the deeper themes so well-developed in this book are being played out no less dramtically all across the country.

Season at the Point: The Birds and Birders of Cape May
Published in Paperback by Atlantic Monthly Press (June, 1992)
Authors: Jack Connor and Don Almquist
Average review score:

A gentle, yet high-impact book
This is a book of many moods, and all of them well-written. It is, by turns, a giggle-provoking acocunt of the eccentricities of those strange folks who watch birds, a warmly nostalgic portrait of the Cape May that once was, a fascinating account of the on-the-spot naturalism that goes on during migrations, and a compelling call for action to preserve the remaining natural beauty of this unique point in the otherwise wasted state of New Jersey. Though it is definitely a sedate read, it is a pleasant one.

Seasons of the Moose
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (June, 1992)
Authors: Jennie Promack and Thomas J. Sanker
Average review score:

Wonderful photos and description of moose behavior.
The photography is very well done. The authors relate their pains-taking study of these powerful animals. The reported observations blend well with accumulated knowledge of moose. My recollection is that this book is based on observations of moose in the mountain west area of the U.S.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon: National Parks

Big Trees and Backcountry
This map and guide, prepared by the AAA of Southern California, provides an excellent overview of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, which are separate parks, even though they are adjacent to one another and administered jointly. They were established for basically two purposes: to preserve several stands of giant sequoias and to also preserve a large portion of backcountry in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains.
Besides an overall map of the two parks, showing all of the most prominent features, including major trails (John Muir/Pacific Crest, Paradise Valley, High Sierra, and Mount Whitney), more detailed inset maps of the main areas of interest are also provided, including Grant Grove, Mineral King, Cedar Grove, and Giant Forest, where most tourist activity takes place.
Much written information is also provided to help you plan and to also enhance your park experience, such as the human and geological history of the area, info concerning the climate, wildlife (with a special section about black bears), and plant life of the various life zones, points of interest, and recreational opportunities, such as bicycling, fishing, dayhiking trails, horseback riding and pack trips, picnicking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and winter sports (cross-country skiing, ice climbing and snowshoe hiking).
In addition, general information is provided, including fees and regulations, supplies and services, guided tours and campfire programs, and highway information.

Finally, there is a list of campgrounds and lodging facilities, both in the parks and nearby areas, with detailed desriptions of each.
Although there is some general trail information in this publication, it is recommended that more detailed maps, such as the US Geological Survey Topo map series or Green Trails maps be used for hiking, especially for longer day hikes and backpacking. A detailed guidebook is also essential.
This map and guide should prove invaluable in helping you to plan your trip to this remarkably beautiful area.

Shadowfires/Limited and Signed
Published in Hardcover by Dark Harvest Books (October, 1990)
Authors: Dean R. Koontz and Phil Parks
Average review score:

Would make a good movie
In this story of a genetic invention gone wrong Dean Koontz describes his monster with such discriptiveness that you can accually picture the horrible thing. His carefull attention to detail made the book come to life. In reading this you will get to know Ben shaddway( Marine recon Nam vet who sells realestate) and Rebecca Leben ( a lively young women in the process of divorcing a monster). I wanted the story to go on and on just to see what happened to its characters. This story contains alot of Bruce Willis worthy action, including car chases, foot pursuits, and martial arts.I recommend that before reading this set aside allot of free time because you wont be able to put it down once you pick it up.
